Kendriya Vidyalaya Balvatika Admission 2026-27: Will a Computerised Lottery Decide Your Child’s First Steps in Kendriya Vidyalaya?

KVS Balvatika Admissions 2026-27 are now open: check eligibility, age criteria, reservation quotas, documents, and key dates

New Delhi: Online registration has started today at exactly 10:00 AM (20 March 2026) on the official website https://kvsangathan.nic.in/ and will remain open till 2 April 2026, 11:59 PM. This is a complete and factual guide on how Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) is implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 through its Balvatika programme — with no interviews, no tests, and selection done only through a transparent computerised lottery system.

What is Balvatika?

KVS offers Balvatika as a structured early childhood education programme based on play and activities for children aged 3 to 6 years. It has introduced this programme step-by-step to align with the NEP 2020’s 5+3+3+4 education system. It is available in three levels in selected Kendriya Vidyalayas:

• Balvatika-1 (similar to pre-nursery)
• Balvatika-2
• Balvatika-3 (similar to upper kindergarten)

KVS will directly promote children who take admission in Balvatika-3 this year to Class I next year. In such schools, KVS will reduce one Class I section from fresh admissions. This ensures a continuous 12-year education path in KVS.

Who is Eligible? (Age Criteria as on 31 March 2026)

KVS has fixed strict age limits:

For admission, KVS has set clear age criteria for each level. To begin with, for Balvatika-1, the child must have completed 3 years but should be less than 4 years old. Similarly, for Balvatika-2, the child should be at least 4 years old but below 5 years. Moving ahead, for Balvatika-3, the required age is 5 years completed but less than 6 years. Finally, for Class I, the child must have completed 6 years of age but should be below 8 years.

Only Children with Special Needs (CwSN) can get a maximum relaxation of 2 years.

Age will be calculated only from the birth certificate issued by a government authority. No relaxation is allowed in normal cases.

Where is Balvatika Available?

As of 13 March 2026, Balvatika is available in 518 Kendriya Vidyalayas across India:

• 89 schools offer all three levels (Balvatika-1, 2, and 3)
• 429 schools offer only Balvatika-3

Admissions for Balvatika-1 and Balvatika-3 are done online only. Balvatika-2 admissions are mostly offline (except in newly opened schools).

Five schools will not take Balvatika admissions this year due to administrative reasons:

• Sec-6 Rourkela
• No. 2 Patiala
• Sainj Kullu
• No. 1 Chamera
• IOC Noonmati

How to Apply (Step-by-Step Process)

  1. Visit the official website: https://admission.kvs.gov.in

  4. Upload required documents (or keep them ready for verification)
  5. Submit the form
  6. Save your registration number and take a printout

Only one application is allowed per child. Multiple applications will be rejected. Registration is completely free.

Priority Categories (Who Gets Preference?)

KVS follows a fixed priority system, especially in Civil/Defence schools:

  1. Children of Central Government employees & Ex-servicemen
  2. Children of Government of India Autonomous Bodies/PSUs/Institutes
  3. Children of State Government employees
  4. Children of State PSUs/Autonomous bodies
  5. All other applicants

In Project/IHL schools, children of sponsor employees get first priority.

Preference within categories is based on the number of transfers of parents in the last 7 years.

Reservation System (Out of 40 Seats Per Section)

• RTE quota: 25% (10 seats) – for nearby children from SC/ST/EWS/BPL/OBC-NCL/CwSN (free till Class VIII)
• SC: 15% (6 seats)
• ST: 7.5% (3 seats)
• OBC-NCL: 27% (11 seats)
• CwSN: 3% (across all categories)

How the Lottery Works

The admission process follows a fixed and transparent order:

  1. RTE quota lottery
  2. CwSN reservation
  3. Priority Category I
  4. Priority Category II
  5. Filling SC/ST/OBC-NCL seats
  6. Remaining categories

There is no manual selection — everything is done through a computerised draw.
