A 100-feet tall mobile tower collapsed in the residential Block B2 of Safdarjung Enclave around 4 AM on Sunday, following intense rainfall and strong winds. While there were no injuries, the incident has triggered widespread concern among residents about the safety of infrastructure in densely populated areas.
The tower, which was reportedly installed in the midst of opposition from locals, fell near several homes, narrowly avoiding what could have been a major tragedy. Residents described the moment as terrifying. “There was a loud thud, almost like an explosion. The tower came crashing down just meters away from our window,” said Meenu Kapoor, a local resident.
Soon after the incident, former Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Malviya Nagar, Somnath Bharti, visited the site and called the collapse “a near-deadly act of criminal negligence.” In a series of social media posts and press interactions, Bharti claimed the tower had been installed without proper approval or safety inspections and demanded that a criminal FIR be lodged against those responsible.
“This could have been a mass casualty event if it had happened during the day. The authorities must be held accountable. This tower was an illegal threat to life from day one,” Bharti said during his visit.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted strong winds and thunderstorms in the capital, with gusts reaching up to 100 km/h. The weather conditions are being cited as the immediate cause of the collapse, but local residents and civic activists insist that poor structural integrity and negligence played a larger role.
Officials from the municipal corporation and police visited the location later in the day to assess the damage. The site has been cordoned off, and an inquiry has reportedly been initiated. However, no official statement has been released yet regarding the legality of the tower’s installation or any potential lapses in maintenance.
As mobile infrastructure continues to expand across urban India, this incident has reignited debate over how and where such towers should be installed. Residents are now calling for a city-wide audit of similar structures to ensure public safety and prevent future disasters.
