Nearly 400 missiles and over 1,000 drones fired; attack damages major medical center and wounds dozens

In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing conflict, Iran launched a powerful assault on Israel overnight, firing nearly 400 ballistic missiles and over 1,000 drones in a single coordinated offensive. Soroka Medical Center, the biggest hospital in southern Israel, was one of the worst-hit places in the attack. This has led to strong criticism from around the world and growing fears that the conflict could spread further across the region.
The attack, which Israeli officials have labeled an act of terrorism rather than warfare, caused extensive damage to medical infrastructure. At least 40 people were injured, including hospital staff and nearby residents, while emergency services scrambled to reroute patients and stabilize critical operations amid the destruction.
In immediate retaliation, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched precision airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military assets, including the Arak heavy-water nuclear reactor. Explosions were reported near Khondab, prompting evacuations and raising alarm over potential nuclear fallout. Israeli leaders have emphasized the strikes were aimed at preventing further weapons development by Tehran.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a sharp warning following the retaliatory strikes, threatening “severe consequences” if Israel or its allies intensified their operations. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Iran of targeting civilians intentionally, calling the strike on a hospital “a blatant war crime” and vowing a “decisive response.”
The human cost of the exchange is already stark. Israeli sources confirm at least 24 fatalities with dozens more wounded, while Iranian reports state over 220 people have been killed in counterattacks. Residential buildings, schools, and critical infrastructure have also sustained damage on both sides, further deepening the humanitarian crisis.
As the international community scrambles to de-escalate tensions, calls for restraint have poured in from the United Nations, the European Union, and regional players like Turkey and Egypt. However, with both nations hardening their positions, fears are growing that the conflict could spiral beyond containment and plunge the Middle East into a larger war.
