Overcrowding continues to claim lives as passengers fall from packed Mumbai local; Central Railway under fire over safety concerns
9 June 2025, New Delhi
In a deeply disturbing incident underscoring the ongoing risks of overcrowded suburban trains, six passengers tragically lost their lives after falling from a moving local between Diva and Mumbra stations in Maharashtra’s Thane district on Sunday.
Central Railway officials have reported that the tragedy happened while the train was beyond capacity during rush hour. Witnesses reported that as the train was moving, individuals lost their balance and fell out of the compartments.
The deadly event occurred when the train was traveling to Mumbai, disrupting regular rail operations and necessitating an emergency reaction from local authorities and railway police. Numerous additional travelers are reportedly hurt and receiving medical attention at nearby hospitals.
Railway officials have confirmed six fatalities, while preliminary reports indicate that overcrowding was the primary cause. Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine lapses in protocol and safety management.
