Operation Ghost SIM: Assam Police Uncover and Crack Major Cybercrime Network

19 May 2025, New Delhi

In a major operation against cybercrime and suspected espionage, Assam Police, in coordination with Army intelligence and the Special Task Force (STF), have busted a fake SIM card racket allegedly linked to Pakistani operatives. Dubbed ‘Operation Ghost SIM,’ the crackdown led to the arrest of seven individuals across Assam, Rajasthan, and Telangana, while 14 more suspects are currently under investigation.

The operation began after credible intelligence revealed that Indian SIM cards were being misused to set up WhatsApp accounts and send OTPs (One-Time Passwords) to individuals in Pakistan. These SIMs, acquired through fake documents and stolen identities, were allegedly being used for cyber fraud and activities that could compromise national security.

As part of a well-planned crackdown, teams carried out raids across five districts in Assam, Rajasthan, and Telangana, leading to the seizure of 948 SIM cards. Among those arrested were individuals from Rajasthan’s Bharatpur and Alwar, Assam’s Dhubri and Bilasipara, along with one suspect picked up from Telangana.

The accused have been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal conspiracy and abetting war against the nation. They also face serious charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) of 1967 and the Information Technology Act, highlighting the gravity of their alleged crimes.

Responding firmly to the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed his government’s zero-tolerance stance against anti-national elements. He emphasized that anyone found supporting or endorsing such activities would be met with stringent action, affirming that Assam will never serve as a refuge for those acting against the nation.
