Dharma Productions’ romance comedy Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari debuted its teaser on Friday, promising a funny tale of love starring Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, with Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf playing important parts. However, the first glimpse has left social media users underwhelmed, sparking disappointment and debate online. Many viewers felt the teaser lacked spark, particularly criticizing the absence of palpable chemistry between Varun and Janhvi.
Several even argued that Sanya Malhotra, despite being cast in a secondary role, would have made a stronger female lead, while others expressed that Rohit Saraf, paired with Sanya, displayed more screen presence in their brief moments than the official leads. A section of users on X and Reddit voiced dissatisfaction with the casting, with comments such as, “Wish Rohit & Sanya were the actual lead pair,” and “Sanya and Rohit are giving main character energy, while the leads look like side characters.”
Others lamented that Sanya, known for her strong performances, had been sidelined, with one remarking, “She should’ve been the main lead, but Papa Jo had other plans.” Some even criticized Janhvi Kapoor’s on-screen appeal, calling her distracting, while a few questioned Varun Dhawan’s career choices, suggesting he avoid films linked to his father or Karan Johar. Despite the criticism, a handful of viewers admitted the teaser looked decent, though many agreed the lead pair failed to generate excitement. The teaser itself opens with Varun Dhawan dressed as Baahubali, only to be mocked by a friend as “Ranveer Singh ki dhoti me Prabhas ka paudha,” before introducing himself as “sanskari Sunny.” It then cuts to a lively montage showcasing Janhvi in a saree, Sanya in a dance sequence, and Rohit Saraf making a stylish Shah Rukh Khan-inspired entrance reminiscent of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
The picture, which was directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, Adar Poonawalla, and Khaitan himself, is marketed as a spiritual continuation of the well-liked Dulhania series, in which Varun previously starred opposite Alia Bhatt. Though the teaser has already sparked concerns about whether the movie can live up to the tradition of its predecessors, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, which also stars Maniesh Paul and Akshay Oberoi in supporting roles, is scheduled for release in theaters on October 2.
