President of the United States Donald Trump has expressed optimism about resolving existing trade issues with India while at the White House. He stated that India has high tariffs and also said that he had a good relationship with the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Modi, whom he called a “very smart man” and a “great leader,” and that he was sure everything would be resolved with respect to the tariffs.
The United States has raised a persistent concern regarding India’s high tariffs on American products. This has complicated the trade relationship between the countries. India has recently taken proactive steps to ameliorate the issues and enhance trade relationships. They have made specific cuts to tariffs on major U.S. agricultural products like bourbon whiskey and almonds. There is also discussion about eliminating tariffs on U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports to improve economic relations.

To avert potential trade tensions, India has increased energy purchases from the United States, and wants to negotiate a mutually beneficial trade agreement. India is attempting to reduce its likelihood of retaliatory tariffs from the United States, as well as cement its economic ties with the United States through a reduction in tariffs on U.S. imports.
With both countries taking action to resolve trade disputes, several analysts expect an agreement that is beneficial to both sides. Trump’s praise of Prime Minister Modi, and India’s willingness to make some trade concessions, provide evidence of a cooperative mindset to trade and economic cooperation. If trade discussions progressing, the two countries may follow this to a trade relationship that supports both countries through mutually beneficial trade.
