Petition Urges Formation of High-Level Committee to Investigate Illegal Coaching Institutes and Their Safety Violations
New Delhi 30th July 2024
The Delhi High Court has set a hearing for this Wednesday on a plea that calls for a comprehensive investigation into the sad drowning of three civil service aspirants at a coaching center in Old Rajinder Nagar. This is a significant legal move. A high-level committee is requested by the Monday-filed petition to look into the event and solve more general issues with illicit coaching centers.
Tragically, Tanya Soni from Telangana, Nevin Dalwin from Kerala, and Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh lost their lives in a harrowing incident where they were trapped in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle. This occurrence is highlighted in the petition. When it rained a lot on July 27, the basement—which had been converted into a library—flooded. There were allegedly civic norms broken by the coaching center, which had only one entry and exit point and no adequate drainage facilities.

The petition, filed by an NGO, asks for the creation of a distinct panel to look into coaching centers that aren’t properly licensed or equipped with safety precautions, in addition to addressing the recent disaster. The document also calls for the establishment of district-level committees in each of Delhi’s districts to investigate unlawful commercial construction practices.
The earlier disclosure by the Delhi Police that just 67 out of the 583 coaching establishments in the city have fire safety certificates emphasizes the urgency of the plea. This number underscores the necessity for thorough control and raises questions about the widespread non-compliance with safety laws.
The outcome of the Delhi High Court’s upcoming deliberations on these crucial matters may establish significant precedents for the control and security requirements of teaching facilities throughout the area.
