Over 200 quakes shake Santorini, officials issue warnings

Santorini, the famous Greek island, has been rattled recently by more than 200 small tremors, some reaching magnitudes of 4.8. These trembling events have suggested that larger quake activity may be affecting the island’s infrastructure and tourism.
In the event of a strong tremor, citizens are encouraged to move towards higher ground and as much inland as possible. The same safety precautions, even for small nearby islands, like Amorgos, exist there.

Greek authorities have sent rescue teams, brought in tents to higher grounds, and advised locals from going the shore or into any old building. Schools were closed as a precaution.
“As far as the situation is concerned, Greek authorities instructed citizens to avoid big gatherings inside enclosures, avoid some Santorini ports, derelict buildings and to drain water from swimming pools”.

Tourism Impact

Due to the continuous tremors, there are increasing departures of foreign labor and some tourists from the island. In response, Aegean Airlines has scheduled additional flights.

Santorini, with a meager population of 15,500, represents one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations; a large number of 3.4 million tourists could visit in 2023 and thereby further exacerbates concerns regarding overtourism.

while Santorini continues to attract visitors, the latest bout of seismic activity and the effects of overtourism have emphasized the need for greater focus on the island’s safety and sustainable tourism. The authorities will monitor the situation and apply necessary measures for the protection of residents, visitors, and the environment with intent. It is now time for all parties to keep awareness about safety issues while considering the long-term impact of such massive tourist influxes on the island’s environment and infrastructure.
