Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Expansion: BJP’s Ramniwas Rawat Inducted as Minister

Ramniwas Rawat, a Former Congress Leader, Joins CM Mohan Yadav’s cabinet as minister

New Delhi, July 8, 2024

On Monday, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expanded his cabinet by inducting BJP leader Ramniwas Rawat as a minister. Governor Mangubhai Patel administered the oath of office and secrecy to Rawat in the presence of CM Mohan Yadav at the Raj Bhawan.

Ramniwas Rawat, a seasoned politician and six-time MLA from Vijaypur in Sheopur district, made headlines when he left the Congress and joined the BJP during the Lok Sabha poll campaign on April 30. Although Rawat has not yet resigned from his assembly position despite his new allegiance.

CM Yadav, who took office on December 13, 2023, after the assembly elections, had previously inducted 28 legislators into his cabinet on December 25. With Rawat’s addition, the cabinet’s strength has now risen to 29, just five short of the maximum allowed 34 ministers in the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly.

The 64-year-old Rawat began his political career in 1990 when he was elected as an MLA from Vijaypur. In 1993, he was a minister in the cabinet of former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh and a well-known OBC leader from the Gwalior-Chambal region. He ran in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections against BJP candidate Narendra Singh Tomar from Morena but did not win.

The BJP’s return to power in the November assembly elections was marked by a crushing victory, with the Congress receiving only 66 seats. Since then, three Congress MLAs have switched sides to the BJP which include Ramniwas Rawat, Kamlesh Shah, and Nirmala Sapre.

Rawat’s appointment to the cabinet is expected to pave the way for a by-election in the Vijaypur constituency within the next six months, since he plans to resign from his MLA position.(Also read: BJP and Opposition clash on Lok Sabha Speaker Election: Rahul Gandhi emphasized Deputy Speaker)
