The proposal to incorporate Manusmriti into the LLB syllabus was scheduled to be discussed during an Academic Council meeting on Friday. Anju Wali Tikoo, dean of the Faculty of Law, defended the idea, claiming that it was designed to explore Indian scholarly perspectives rather than hinder women’s empowerment or underprivileged populations.

The Congress party strongly opposed the idea, deeming it unconstitutional and accused the BJP of wanting to replace the Constitution with ancient writings. Jairam Ramesh, a veteran Congressman, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the RSS of subverting the Constitution.

The government is dedicated to upholding the Constitution and promoting a progressive academic environment.
