Billionaire Michael Dell was reportedly denied late check-out at a five-star Gurgaon hotel, according to the former president of the Oberoi Group in a podcast. Kapil Chopra recorded a podcast with Shantanu Deshpande, the founder of Bombay Shaving Company, in which the topic of hotel customer complaints came up.
Chopra, who was president of the Oberoi Group from 2013 to 2018, stated that hotels’ stringent check-in and check-out times are a source of frustration for many clients. He referenced the example of Michael Dell, who was once denied late check-out at the five-star Oberoi Gurgaon.
Chopra claimed that the millionaire chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies approached the receptionist in his usual “unassuming way” and requested if he might check out late. Dell had just realised he needed to stay at the hotel till the evening.
On her first day on the job, the receptionist was unable to appreciate the significance of the guest she was dealing with.
“The country head and other Dell employees were on their phones, leaving Michael Dell alone in the lobby…” Kapil Chopra told Deshpande that he walks up to the front desk calmly and unassumingly, asking if he can have a late., you will be charged for half a day. “If it’s after 6 p.m., it’s a full day charge,” Chopra explained.
The minor encounter escalated into a major issue, with Michael Dell deciding to check out of the hotel completely. Chopra claimed to have gotten a call from Dell’s country head.
The country head got in touch with me and mentioned that we might have charged them more than necessary. Why was Michael Dell refused?” Chopra recalls, “He decided to leave early to make a point about the situation.”
“Michael Dell is very particular about setting an example,” said Chopra, who left the Oberoi Group in 2018 to establish The Postcard Hotel and EazyDiner.
