Unfazed by ankle-deep water, journalists continue working and socializing as the Press Club floods.
New Delhi, 1 August 2024
A photograph capturing the Press Club in Delhi submerged in ankle-deep water after heavy rainfall has gone viral online. What stands out in the image is not just the flooded room but the sight of journalists carrying on with their work, seemingly unfazed by the situation.
The image, shared by journalist Bijendra Singh on X, has received tens of thousands of views, resulting in a rush of wordplay, puns, and amusing replies on social media.
“A pool of journos, literally!” said X user Shambhavi Pant. “Someone remarked, ‘Journalists in Delhi are indulging in food and drinks despite the flooded surroundings—an uncommon sight in India,’ and enjoying the heavy rains.” “No need for water in their drinks, just add ice,” said another. “Rain or shine, or even heavy waterlogging, the drinks must go on,” added a third. “Cheers,” said Srini Sitaraman. Some people lauded the photograph as a monument to the “spirit of Delhi,” while others joked about renaming the Press Club the Pool Club of India.

The picture, taken on Wednesday, shows a table with open bottles of alcohol and snacks. Around the table, a group of men are seen—some busy on their phones, others exchanging greetings. One man, avoiding the water, has his legs propped up on a chair. Additionally, other Press Club members are pictured with their trousers rolled up, wading through the water.
Situated in the upscale Lutyens neighborhood of the national capital, the Press Club serves as a hub for journalists and media professionals. It was one of many locations that experienced flooding amid record rainfall in the city.
