Seven Dead, Schools Closed as Flash Floods and Landslides Batter Jammu Division

Union government assures full support; local administration focuses on restoring power, water and connectivity.

New Delhi, August 18, 2025

The School Education Department of Jammu has announced the closure of all government and private schools in the division on Monday, August 18, due to severe weather conditions. The decision comes after flash floods and landslides hit several parts of Kathua following a cloudburst late Saturday night, which caused widespread damage and loss of life. At least seven people were killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rains, while a railway track, sections of the national highway, and even a local police station sustained damage. Rescue operations have been intensified to retrieve stranded vehicles and ensure the safety of residents.

The situation in both Kathua and Kishtwar remains critical, with the Indian Army leading on-ground operations alongside the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), police, and local authorities. Relief measures are being carried out to restore connectivity and provide immediate support to those affected.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the central government is closely monitoring developments and assured that all necessary assistance will be provided. He confirmed that teams have been deployed and coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir administration is ongoing to manage rescue and relief efforts.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra described the incidents as deeply tragic and questioned the preparedness of the administration despite advance weather advisories. He highlighted possible gaps in preventive measures and rescue operations, urging better readiness in the future.

In Kishtwar, officials reported significant progress in restoration efforts. Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar stated that massive boulders had been cleared, rope breakers installed to search for possible victims, and power and water supplies restored. With Army support, a new bridge is being constructed to reconnect the affected region, and all passengers stranded in Machail have been safely evacuated
