PM Modi assures assistance following 7.7 magnitude Earthquake
New Delhi, March 28, 2025
On March 28, 2025, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, killing thousands and creating extensive damage. Tremors were felt in Thailand as far away as Bangkok, where a high-rise building under construction collapsed, killing many workers.
Following the disaster, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed great concern and solidarity with the nations involved in the disaster when he stated that India would provide all assistance possible and directed Indian officials to be on standby.
Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, which is near the quake’s epicentre, experienced substantial structural damage, including the collapse of a bridge 90 years old, as well as the degradation of portions of the highway connecting the two cities, Mandalay and Yangon. The governing junta has also declared a state of emergency and begun dispatching rescue teams.
A 30-storey building that was under construction collapsed in Bangkok near the Chatuchak Market due to tremors, and more than 43 workers were trapped in the building. The Thai government has declared Bangkok a disaster area and is in the process of response efforts in the situation.
PM Modi’s proposal for providing aid emphasises India’s commitment to the spirit of regional cooperation. The BIMSTEC leaders’ summit is set to be held in Bangkok on April 4, where they will deliberate on disaster responses among the member states: India, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.
As aftershocks persist, officials in Myanmar and Thailand are reminding residents to stay alert. The general public and the world are being closely watched by the international community led by India, which is ready to come to the forefront of providing support and relief.
