From honouring Dr. B.C. Roy’s legacy to remembering fallen heroes, the nation comes together to celebrate the courage, compassion, and commitment of its doctors
1 July 2025, New Delhi
On a day when stethoscopes become symbols of strength and white coats echo silent stories of sacrifice, India pauses to honour its real-life heroes — the doctors. National Doctors’ Day 2025 is being celebrated across the country today with heartfelt tributes, community celebrations, and a nationwide reflection on the indispensable role of medical professionals in building a healthier nation.
This day carries profound meaning for the medical community and the nation, as it marks both the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy — a legendary physician and one of India’s most respected public figures. Known for his exceptional medical expertise and unwavering dedication to public service, Dr. Roy also served as the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to healthcare and nation-building, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1961. Even today, his legacy continues to inspire generations of doctors across the country.
UGC and Medical Institutions Join the Celebration
The University Grants Commission (UGC) marked the occasion by issuing an advisory to colleges and universities to host discussions on medical ethics, innovation, and the life of Dr. B.C. Roy. Educational institutions across the country organized webinars, poster exhibitions, and essay competitions to engage students in honoring the profession.
At the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a symbolic tree-planting ceremony was held by doctors who had served during the COVID-19 pandemic — a reminder of how the roots of service grow deeper in times of crisis.

Remembering the Lives Behind the Lab Coats
National Doctors’ Day is also a time to remember the doctors who lost their lives in the line of duty, whether during pandemics, natural disasters, or while serving in conflict zones. Candlelight vigils were held in cities like Kolkata, Pune, and Bhopal to honour their memory.
On this National Doctors’ Day, India doesn’t just acknowledge a profession — it salutes a calling. A calling that demands knowledge, compassion, sleepless nights, and steady hands. A calling that saves lives and touches souls.
