The 2024–25 academic year will see a reduction in tuition for 2,100 MBBS seats across 13 GMERS college campuses.

The Gujarat government has reduced the fees for MBBS programs provided at 13 state-run colleges under the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) significantly in an important effort to ease the financial strain on people who want to become doctors.
Following recent protests by students and political groups over a fee increase that was introduced last month, the decision was made during a cabinet meeting in Gandhinagar, which was presided over by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
The updated fee schedule results in a sharp drop in costs: for government quota seats, fees have dropped by 80%, from Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 3.75 lakh. Similarly, there has been a 62.5 percent decrease in the costs for management quota seats, from Rs 17 lakh to Rs 12 lakh. The 2024–2025 academic year will mark the implementation of these changes. Rushikesh Patel, the minister of health, confirmed that the government’s determination to put students’ needs first was what motivated the decision.

There had been strong opposition to the previous price increase, which saw management quota costs increase from Rs 9 lakh to Rs 17 lakh and government quota fees climb from Rs 3.3 lakh to Rs 5.5 lakh. The Gujarat Congress and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) were two groups that strongly objected to the fee increase; the latter even threatened to initiate protests.

The reduction in tuition by the state government demonstrates its attentiveness to student concerns and guarantees increased accessibility to medical education in Gujarat.
