Amid the BJP and Opposition standoff over the Lok Sabha Speaker election, Rahul Gandhi asserts that the office of Deputy Speaker should go to the opposition.
New Delhi, 25 June 2024
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has underlined that the Deputy Speaker post typically goes to the opposition in a major political impasse. This claim is made as the Lok Sabha Speaker election approaches, having failed to come to an agreement between the opposition and the ruling BJP-led NDA. The opposition will put forward seasoned Congressman K Suresh, while the NDA has chosen BJP MP Om Birla.

Following indications from the opposition INDIA group that it would be open to considering possibilities, the government assigned Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju the responsibility of negotiating a deal on the Lok Sabha Speaker nominee. The opposition might be offered the job of Deputy Speaker if a deal was reached over the NDA’s Speaker nominee, according to sources from the past.
The position of Deputy Speaker has been unoccupied since 2019 when the BJP named AIADMK’s M Thambi Durai to the position in 2014. Rahul Gandhi, a congressman, brought attention to the fact that Rajnath Singh called Mallikarjun Kharge, the party president, urging him to back the NDA candidate. While the opposition is willing to back the Speaker, Gandhi reaffirmed that the Deputy Speaker position should traditionally be assigned to the opposing side.
Calling Mallikarjun Kharge, Rajnath Singh asked for his support as Speaker. Although all members of the opposition choose to support the speaker, the opposition ought to be named deputy speaker in accordance with tradition. Rahul Gandhi said that Rajnath Singh still hasn’t followed through on his pledge to give Mallikarjun Kharge a callback.
