In an attempt to address the ongoing attacks against Hindus and other minorities, Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, has called for a meeting with Hindu students and community members on Monday. The conversation, according to the interim government, would centre on finding a solution to the current situation and guaranteeing the safety of the Hindu population.

Reports state that after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led administration on August 5, minority communities in Bangladesh have seen at least 205 cases of violence in 52 districts. In its first formal statement since the cabinet members were sworn in, the interim government stated on Sunday that “the attacks on religious minorities in some places have been noted with grave concern.”

Minority groups have been calling for the enactment of a minority protection law to defend their rights amid growing concerns. Eight demands have been compiled by a Hindu student organisation and will be presented to Yunus.

The requests include creating a Ministry of Minority Affairs, upgrading the Hindu Religious Welfare Trust to a foundation, modernizing the Pali Education Board, creating a five-day holiday during Sharadiya Durga Puja, and creating a fast-track tribunal for quick trials in cases of attacks on Hindus.
