A record one million users joined ChatGPT in just one hour after OpenAI’s recent deployment of its native image generating capability for free users caused a viral frenzy. The platform’s previous spectacular expansion, which took five days to reach the same milestone, is mirrored in this sharp increase in interaction.
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, “We welcomed 1 million new users in just one hour,” on X.
The emergence of AI-generated images, particularly those influenced by Studio Ghibli’s renowned art style, which has ignited social media, was a major factor in this spike in activity.

Ghibli Fever Takes Over Social Media
All ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team members were able to utilise OpenAI’s new image generating feature on March 26. However, the most noteworthy upgrade came soon after: the tool was made available to free users. The capacity to produce Ghibli-like visuals quickly led to an explosion of anime-style artwork on the internet, igniting a creative movement that spread around the world.
Despite the excitement, OpenAI faced the difficulty of demand exceeding supply, with CEO Sam Altman stating that the platform’s GPUs were struggling to handle the tremendous load. Altman commented on X, “Watching people adore images in ChatGPT is a lot of fun.” Our GPUs are melting, though. We will temporarily implement rate limitations as we work to improve efficiency. Hopefully it won’t take long! ChatGPT’s free tier will soon feature three generations every day.
