Abbas Naqvi, a former Union minister, added that the ban on the Kanwar Yatra issued by the Muzaffarnagar Police would encourage the “disease of untouchability” throughout India.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi responded to criticism from online trolls regarding his social media post on Thursday, July 18, against the context of the Muzaffarnagar Police’s order requiring restaurants along the Kanwar Yatra route to post the names of their owners.
Naqvi emphasized the possible problems with the police order and voiced worries that it would encourage untouchability in India. Despite criticism from certain social media users, he maintained his position against the directive’s potentially polarizing effects and stuck to his original remarks. Because of Naqvi’s comments, there has been more discussion on how these actions affect societal harmony during the Kanwar Yatra.

“Please do not award me a certificate of reverence and dedication for the Kanwar Yatra. Naqvi said in Hindi, “I sincerely believe that no faith should be held captive by intolerance and untouchability.”
A vintage photo of him taking part in the Kanwar Yatra was also posted by him. Naqvi commented on X, seemingly referring to the orders: “Kuch ati-utsahi adhikariyon ke aadesh hadbadi mein gadbadi wali asprishyata ki bimari ko badhawa de sakte hain.” The saying “Astha ka samman hona chahiye, par asprishyata ka sanrakshan nahi hona chahiye” means that some overzealous authorities’ hurried directives could spread the untouchability epidemic. Respecting faith is important, but encouraging untouchability is not.

The BJP, which is presently in charge of Uttar Pradesh, however, stood by the Muzaffarnagar Police’s directive mandating that the names of the owners of all restaurants and food carts be displayed. The party clarified that this move allows Hindus who are fasting to select eateries that provide only vegetarian food, increasing the likelihood that they will be served Satvik cuisine.
Chief of Police Abhishek Singh of Muzaffarnagar had earlier said, “The district is getting ready for Sawan month. This is where about 240 miles of the Kanwar Yatra path goes. All eateries, including hotels, dhabas, and food carts along the route, have been instructed to display the names of their proprietors or the individuals working at these establishments.”
The purpose of this action is to avoid confusion among Kanwariyas and any disruptions to law and order. Reporters were notified by him that “all establishments are voluntarily complying with this directive.”
